Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making
Brian H. Bornstein, Richard L. Wiener, Robert Schopp, Steven L. Willborn
- Springer

Our basic assumption about the law is that it is designed to operate fairly and openly. But with human beings as the ultimate decision makers, how do we prevent discrimination within the legal arena, and how does the law decide whether others have behaved in a discriminatory manner? Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making examines four controversial areas involving people's perceptions of others-racial profiling, affirmative action, workplace harassment, and hate speech/hate crime-from the perspectives of psychology, decision theory, and the law.
This book's contributing experts raise these critical questions:
How valid are legal assumptions about human behavior?
What cognitive processes underlie biased behavior?
What do personal experience and situational cues contribute to decision making?
How do individuals' perceptions of the law influence their judgment?
Can psychology help legislators write more effective laws?
In answering them, the book:
Compares rational, descriptive, and normative decision-making models in legal contexts
Provides important insights into legal decision making by non-specialists (police, administrators, jurors)
Clarifies and broadens the role of social science in the courts
Promotes improved dialogue between the field of psychology and law to create a more socially aware jurisprudence.
Social Consciousness in Legal Decision Making invites the legal and psychology communities to work together in solving some of our most pressing social problems. -
Probabilistic Modeling in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics
Stephen Roberts, Dirk Husmeier, Richard Dybowski
- Springer
- 6 May 2006
- 9781846281198
Probabilistic Modelling in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics has been written for researchers and students in statistics, machine learning, and the biological sciences. The first part of this book provides a self-contained introduction to the methodology of Bayesian networks. The following parts demonstrate how these methods are applied in bioinformatics and medical informatics. All three fields - the methodology of probabilistic modeling, bioinformatics, and medical informatics - are evolving very quickly. The text should therefore be seen as an introduction, offering both elementary tutorials as well as more advanced applications and case studies.

In this book, prominent researchers address these challenges. It deals with health and workability, and gives data and viewpoints on competitive advantages and disadvantages of older workers. The study includes data on attitudes, specific measures and policies from many parts of the world: Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil and Singapore. The authors present a variety of interesting examples of measures used in workplaces, to motivate and enable workers to stay longer in working life. This book is an encounter between research and policy: it contributes to the discussion of policies related to older workers.

L'emotion europeenne. dante, sade, aquin

Forensic Ethics and the Expert Witness
Philip J. Candilis, Robert Weinstock, Richard Martinez
- Springer
- 19 August 2007
- 9780387353838
Why a book about the ethics of forensic psychiatry and related disciplines? Most psychiatrists, after all, learn something in their training about the ethics of medical practice in general and of the practice of psychiatry in particular. Do the maxims that steer all physicians through the ethical complexities of clinical medicine not provide equally effective guidance to clinical and scientific expert witnesses? The answer, in short, is "No. " When psychiatrists, for example, enter the realm of the expert witness, they tread on moral terrain with a significantly different topography than the paths to which they are accustomed in their clinical roles. Clinical psych- trists owe primary allegiance to their patients'interests; for them the prin- ples of beneficence (doing good) and non-maleficence (avoiding harm) will generally take priority over all other considerations. For psychiatrists who serve as experts, however, there are no patients to whom fidelity is due. There are only persons being evaluated for the sake of providing opinions to third parties. Perhaps a defendant in a criminal case, a plaintiff in a tort action, or a claimant in an adjudication of disability benefits or workers' compensation-but not a patient. And that makes all the difference. Whatever its other virtues, no theory of the ethics of forensic psychiatry will serve its purpose unless it offers the psychiatric expert direction in dealing with this situation.
